WHAT ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS?

A dental implant is a post that can function much like one of your tooth roots. Implants are available in both titanium metal and a non-metal ceramic. We can surgically embed this post directly into your jawbone, beneath your gum line, to serve as a permanent stable post that we can then attach a dental prosthetic such as a dental crown, dental bridge or even a full arch denture.

DENTAL IMPLANT FAQ

We believe patient education is the cornerstone of good oral health. During your initial appointment, Young Jun, DDS, MD, FACS will be happy to answer any questions you have regarding dental implants. This is also an excellent opportunity for you to voice any concerns. Staying informed can help you better maintain your restoration and prevent potential problems.

AM I A CANDIDATE?

A majority of our patients are candidates for this minimally invasive treatment. When determining candidacy the biggest factor is on the patient’s ability to heal at a reasonable rate. Certain medical conditions such as diabetes and cancer treatment can slow the healing process, though we can work with your physician to help improve these conditions. Additionally, healing can be slowed from the intake of certain medications, the use of tobacco or marijuana products, we can discuss changes to improve these conditions.

For most patients, if you are in good oral and overall health, you should qualify for implant treatment. We may want to help certain patients reduce periodontitis prior to surgery. Additionally, if you have experienced significant bone deterioration due to tooth loss, you may need a bone graft first. During your consultation, Young Jun, DDS, MD, FACS will be able to determine if implants are right for you. Your consultation usually involves a series of diagnostic tests including digital x-rays and CBCT scans.

AFTER IMPLANT PLACEMENT

Your new tooth will be just as strong, if not stronger than the original tooth was when it was healthy. Here at Placentia Oral Surgery, we have helped many others to have smiles that they once again want to show off with dental implants. If we recommend one or more dental implant for you, here is what you will need to know about what happens after you receive them.

BENEFITS OF DENTAL IMPLANTS

Dental implants are the next best thing to your natural teeth. This makes implants a more convenient, durable, secure, and aesthetically pleasing option over traditional restorations. The numerous benefits of dental implants have made them the industry standard for tooth replacement!

MULTIPLE TEETH REPLACEMENT WITH DENTAL IMPLANTS

Tooth loss is an issue we often see with our patients and, whether the cause is injury or old age, we are prepared to help you replace them. Using dental implants, we can take these gaps or spaces where teeth used to be and insert artificial teeth in their stead. When it comes to multiple spaces near to each other, we suggest the use of implant-supported bridges so that we can efficiently give you replacement teeth with the minimal amount of implants.

SINGLE TOOTH REPLACEMENT WITH DENTAL IMPLANTS

From sports injuries to broken joints, we are here to take care of you as comfortably and painlessly as possible. One common issue we see in our patients is tooth gaps or spacing where natural teeth used to be. When it is only one space, we suggest single tooth implants as an appropriate solution for restoring your smile.

THE IMPLANTS PROCESS

Before we proceed to embedding your dental implant, it is important to determine whether the procedure is right for you. We will first do a thorough evaluation of your medical history and check for any medical conditions that would make the treatment a bad fit for you. Checking the health of your jawbone is a part of this because the bone needs to be strong in order to hold the implants in place.

Once the preparatory steps are completed, placing your dental implant is generally done in our office. The entire process can take as a little as an hour to complete. The real work is done by your body as it heals around the device
in a process known as Osseointegration.

Types of Dental Implants

The amount and type of dental implants that will suit you best varies from patient to patient, but there are several options for those looking for tooth replacement options!

RIDGE AUGMENTATION

Many patients need a bone graft, or ridge augmentation before implantation is possible. Osseointegration, the process responsible for the many benefits of dental implants, requires an adequate amount of bone in the jaw. If osseointegration does not occur, implant failure is virtually guaranteed. Fortunately, we offer ridge augmentation to improve the quantity and quality of deteriorated bone. In many ways, ride augmentation allows patients to receive dental implants when it would otherwise be impossible.

MINI DENTAL IMPLANTS

A dental implant is a small titanium screw that mimics the relationships between the root of a tooth and your jawbone. Once the implant is in place, it serves as the anchor component of a prosthesis. At Placentia Oral Surgery, we also offer mini dental implants for patients who do not qualify for conventional restoration methods.

IMPLANT-SUPPORTED DENTURE

An implant-supported denture is a fantastic option for patients who require dentures. We are able to use implants to stabilize your denture in place. This may include a Ball-retained denture, a Bar-retained denture, or the All on 4 system.

We may recommend an implant-supported denture if you want an upgraded alternative to traditional loose dentures. Implant supported dentures allow our patients to have a replacement option that feels closer to their natural teeth, allowing them to chew and speak naturally, with the knowledge that their denture will stay in place.

ALL-ON-4® TREATMENT CONCEPT

We offer the All-on-4 treatment concept for patients missing all or most of their teeth. As the name suggests, this full-arch restoration only uses four implants to support the entire bridge. The posterior (back) implants are placed at an angle to utilize the strongest part of the jawbone. Other full-arch restorations usually require six to eight implants. Thanks to the revolutionary new technique, All-on-4 is much more effective and minimally-invasive than other options.

ZYGOMATIC IMPLANTS

Instead of the jaw (as is the case with dental implants), zygomatic implants are placed in the cheekbone. There are several reasons why you might have this kind of procedure — the most common one is the lack of sufficient bones in the jaw. Therefore, zygomatic implants are a better option if you don't have enough bones in your jaw.
