The Benefits and Types of Oral Surgery

Posted on 11/8/2021 by Young Jun DDS MD FACS
The Benefits and Types of Oral SurgeryOral surgery is any medical procedure carried out in the mouth. Dentists, orthodontists, and oral and maxillofacial surgeons generally perform these important procedures. There are different types of oral surgeries we perform on our patients, depending on their health needs. Most oral procedures place patients under general anesthesia to avoid any discomfort.

The most common oral surgery is tooth removal, where we remove teeth if they have decay or extreme damage. Removing the infected teeth prevents further dental damage. When wisdom teeth grow, they bring risks of infection and tooth decay. Removing problematic wisdom teeth is painless through oral surgery. Another type of oral surgery used to replace missing teeth is dental implants.

Our team places implants in the jawbone so they can support artificial crowns. Placing veneers, dentures, and bridges through oral surgeries fills the space left behind by missing teeth. We recommend surgery if our patient's jaws are not properly aligned. This causes an improper bite and difficulty in chewing. A bone graft surgery uses bone material from another part of the body to provide support for the teeth.

Benefits of Oral Surgery

We advise our patients to undergo oral surgery since it is beneficial to their oral health. Oral surgery provides a permanent solution to missing teeth through dental implants. This also promotes bone regeneration and better tooth function. Surgery corrects congenital disabilities like cleft palates that affect one's confidence and natural-looking smile. Such oral procedures help identify and remove growths and cancerous tumors.

Finally, minor surgeries like planing and scaling get rid of harmful bacteria that cause gum diseases like periodontitis. This is important, since severe periodontitis can lead to tooth decay and eventual loss. If you have any queries about oral surgeries, feel free to call us and schedule a consultation.
