What are the Pros and Cons for Implant Supported Dentures?

Choosing the appropriate artificial tooth solution can be nerve-wracking. There are so many different options available to the patient. Many shy away from getting dentures because although they are an affordable solution, they have heard about how they are difficult to manage. They are aware of the need to use adhesive in order to keep them in place and the fact it needs to be applied more than once. They are terrified the dentures might move and shift while they talk or while they are eating. One solution to that is by getting implant-supported dentures which do away with the adhesive and provide a more secure way of placing dentures.
What Are the Positive Aspects of Implant Supported Dentures?
One of the biggest benefits of having implant-supported dentures is the security of knowing they will not slip out of place. The dentures are linked to the implant which are permanently embedded into the jawbone of the patient. There are typically two types of implant-supported dentures. The first type is a bar-retained denture. This uses a thin piece of metal on the implant which allows the denture to be attached with small metal clips. The second type is a ball retained implant which uses small sockets over which a clip can be attached to the denture.
What are the Negative Aspects of Implant Supported Dentures?
The increased cost is one aspect to keep in mind because these are not just dentures. The patient needs to get dental implants first before the dentures can be secured to them. Implants are costly and time-consuming requiring several appointments to complete. Dentures are not as strong as natural tooth enamel, and another aspect may be a change in diet to ensure the dentures last longer. They can also become stained because they are more porous than natural teeth too. Implant-supported dentures are a great alternative to traditional dentures. To find out more, please reach out to us.
