What Are Impacted Canines?

A 3d rendering of a mouth with impacted canine teethTooth impaction typically affects the wisdom teeth, which are the third molars or the back teeth. However, this dental issue can also impact the canines. The canine tooth is the sharp-pointed tooth between the incisor and pre-molar. It might fail to erupt appropriately or not emerge in the first place, resulting in oral problems. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon can help resolve the issue through various surgical procedures.

Causes of Impacted Canines

Maxillary canine impaction occurs when a tooth remains trapped beneath the gum tissue. The condition is often a result of overcrowding. If the space between incisors and pre-molars is not adequate for a canine tooth to erupt, it will remain stuck under the gum. It might also result from gum disease, tooth decay, and related oral problems.

Other causes of impacted canines include tooth misalignment and displacement. Bone overlying and abnormal growths in the gums can also block the canine from erupting. In children, the condition occurs when the milk teeth do not fall out on time, preventing the permanent canine from erupting.

Symptoms of Impacted Canines

The symptoms of impacted canines depend on the extent of the condition. Most people experience redness or tenderness of the gums around the impacted canines. Other patients may have difficulty opening and closing the mouth, swollen lymph nodes, or an unpleasant taste in the mouth. If unaddressed, impacted canines can escalate to cause tooth misalignment, periodontal disease, and tooth decay.

Treatment Options for Impacted Canines

Our practitioners will first conduct tests, including digital X-rays and CT scans, to determine the causes and appropriate treatment approach. Depending on the test results, possible treatment solutions may include extracting the retained teeth or surgical exposure of the impacted canine to aid in eruption.
