Extraction Vs. Oral Surgery

You may need a tooth extraction due to mouth infections, crowding, trauma, and oral diseases. Among these, the most prevalent indication for extraction is the removal of wisdom teeth, which often involves more complex techniques. While dentists strive to save teeth whenever possible, extraction becomes viable when it promotes oral health, alleviates discomfort, and prevents potential complications.

What is Simple Tooth Extraction?

Simple extraction procedures are generally easy and are performed in the dental office. They help to address dental issues like advanced gum disease, severe tooth decay, and irreparable damage. The extraction type is typically done on teeth fully visible in the mouth and not concealed beneath the gum line. These extractions are generally less complex and need less invasive techniques.

Dentists use local anesthesia to perform simple extractions. Local anesthesia is administered to the patient to numb the area surrounding the tooth being extracted. This ensures a pain-free experience during the procedure. Simple tooth extraction requires minimal recovery time.

What is Surgical Tooth Extraction?

Surgical tooth extraction is a procedure used to remove teeth that are not easily visible in the mouth. This technique extracts teeth that have not fully erupted through the gum or are broken.

In a surgical extraction, an incision is made in the connective tissue surrounding the tooth, allowing access for its removal. The procedure may involve lifting the soft tissues around the tooth or using tools such as a drill to remove a portion of the adjacent jawbone. These additional steps are necessary to facilitate tooth extraction effectively and safely.

Oral maxillofacial surgeons or dentists with specialized training in oral surgery typically perform surgical tooth extractions. The complexity of the procedure may require the use of sedation or general anesthesia to ensure patient comfort. Proper post-operative care and instructions will be provided after the extraction to promote healing and minimize discomfort.
