Implant Supported Dentures
Dentures are a common way to replace teeth that are missing. With dentures, we will create for you a new set of removable teeth. Dentures have made life easier for countless people, but they are not without problems. Some people complain that their dentures will not stay in place when they eat. Very often it is the lower denture that they will make this complaint about.
Dental implants are another way to replace teeth, but some people do not like that they are permanent. There is a solution that works well for many people. That solution is implant supported dentures. Here at Placentia Oral Surgery, we have helped many others to enjoy the freedom that implant supported dentures can give to them, and we would like to see if you could benefit from them as well.
What Are Implant Supported Dentures?
Implant supported dentures combine dentures and implants. They will have more stability than regular dentures.
With implant supported dentures, we will start the same way that we would for a dental implant. We will place screws into your jaw at strategic places. With a normal implant, a permanent crown would be placed on top once your mouth has healed. That is not the case with implant supported dentures. We will instead fit you with a removable denture. When you have the denture in your mouth, it will be held in place by the screws. Unlike a regular implant, you will be able to take the denture out when you want to as well.
Often we will give a patient implant supported dentures only on the bottom. We will use a regular denture on the top. This is because the top denture tends to be more stable when eating than a traditional bottom denture. That does not mean that we cannot do an implant supported denture on the top as well. We will sometimes recommend it, and some patients prefer to have implant supported dentures in both places.
How to Care for Implant Supported Dentures
Your implant supported dentures are made of the same material that traditional dentures are made of. That means that they need to care in the same way.
You will need to keep your dentures wet at all times. If you do not have them in your mouth, they need to be soaking. You can use special tablets that are made to clean while they soak if you would like. This will help to keep them from getting stained.
It is also important to continue to brush. You will need to brush your implant supported dentures daily, as well as the inside of your mouth.
Implant supported dentures have given many patients a reason to smile once again. They look like natural teeth, and they can be easier for day to day living than traditional dentures.
