Am I a Candidate for Implants?

Diagram of a single dental implantDental implants have improved the quality of life for many people. There are plenty of others, though, who could benefit from dental implants but have not found out for sure because they assumed that they would not be a good candidate for them. Here at Placentia Oral Surgery, we would like to talk to you and evaluate your situation. You very well could be a good candidate for dental implants, and you just do not realize it.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

If you are missing a tooth, if you have a loose tooth, or if you have a tooth that is damaged, you might benefit from one or more dental implants.

There are some things that make someone a good candidate for dental implants. One of the first things that we will check is your overall dental health. We will want to make sure that you do not have any sore of lesions in your mouth. We will also want to make sure that your gums are healthy. If we do find any issues, that does not mean that you will not be able to receive dental implants. We will work to correct the issue before we move ahead.

Another thing that will make you a good candidate for dental implants is if you have enough bone in your jaw. Your jaw will start to lose bone as soon as you lose a tooth, and this can affect whether or not an implant will take. If there is not enough bone if your jaw we might suggest a bone graft. In this, we will add bone to the area before we can move ahead with the implant. This can add weeks to the overall process, so it is important that you have enough time.

Smokers are not good candidates for dental implants. Smoking is not good for your teeth, your gums, your jaw, or your tongue. Smoking will also add to your overall healing time and could prevent the implant from taking. If you smoke, you will need to quit once and for all before we move ahead with an implant.

Your overall health also needs to be good if you are to have a dental implant. You should not have heart problems, or be at risk for stroke or other issues. If you are under treatment for a condition, we will want to speak with your doctor before we move forward.
