Tips for Eating with a Partial Denture

Tips for Eating with a Partial DentureWhen you have missing teeth, there are several ways you can replace them. One of the commonly used methods of replacing missing teeth is by placing partial dentures. These types of dentures are ideal, especially if you have a small section of your teeth missing. As much as partial dentures do a good job replacing lost teeth, you will need time to get used to them. One of the challenges you are more likely to experience with them is dislodging when eating. Luckily, there are tips you can implement to eat comfortably with partial dentures. Some of them include chewing food evenly and eating soft foods.

Start with Soft Foods

During the first few days after getting your partial dentures, you should stick to a soft diet that includes foods like soup, oatmeal, pudding, and apple sauce. These foods are soft and won't make it hard for you to chew. Chewing hard foods after getting new partial dentures can be very uncomfortable and could harm your gums. Therefore, it is a good idea to stick to soft foods before progressing to hard ones.

Chew Food Evenly

Chewing food evenly could also help make partial dentures comfortable when eating. One common mistake people make is chewing food with one side of their mouth. As much as this is less likely to cause damage for people with healthy teeth, it could be problematic for partial denture wearers. This is because it increases the risk of dentures slipping out of position. However, with time, your mouth will adapt to the partial dentures. When that time comes, introduce hard foods slowly. You should also chew them slowly using both sides of your mouth. This will help keep your partial dentures stable.

You are also encouraged to avoid hot liquids during the first few days of wearing partial dentures. Hot liquids could melt down the denture adhesive and dislodge them. Contact our offices for more information on partial dentures.
