Drinks That Are Safe After Oral Surgery

Posted on 9/6/2021 by Young Jun DDS MD FACS
Drinks That Are Safe After Oral SurgeryStandard dental procedures such as tooth extractions, root canals, and fitting dental implants require that you keep your mouth in safe and sanitary conditions afterward. These concerns are not far-fetched. What we drink comes into direct contact with our teeth and gums. They have an impact on our oral health more than we think. Apart from washing away harmful bacteria that settles in unreachable spaces, liquids also help us hydrate, which is essential for our immune system. However, some liquids are not safe to consume after a dental procedure. Substances such as alcohol and soft drinks will do more harm than good. It is a common misconception that alcohol will help kill bacteria; however, it erodes gum tissue, especially in a wound after the procedure. Therefore, what is safe for you to drink after oral surgery?

Drink Lots of Water

Water is arguably the most critical liquid in existence. It is also essential to your teeth. Water will help you wash away any bacteria settling on your wound. It will also keep you well hydrated, aiding your healing process. Water also helps to prevent a condition known as a dry socket in the jaw. However, we recommend that you avoid the use of straw after oral surgery. The suction from the straw might affect the dressings or the wound itself.

Fruit and Vegetable Smoothies

Fruits and vegetables are great for your recovery. They provide essential vitamins and proteins that your body will use to help you heal faster. Be careful to avoid fruits with tiny seeds as they might get lodged in the wound.

A Bowl of Yogurt

Yogurt is an excellent source of protein that helps to fasten the recovery process. You could also use yogurt to fill yourself up as you won't chew properly immediately after a procedure. Yogurt also packs vital minerals such as calcium and zinc.

Be on the Safe Side

While in the recovery phase, it is vital to avoid mistakes that would bring later complications. Let your teeth heal the right way. For more information on what you need to do after an oral surgery, feel free to contact us.
