What Can Happen if Your Mouth Does Not Stay Clean Following Oral Surgery?

Posted on 12/7/2020 by Young Jun DDS MD FACS
What Can Happen if Your Mouth Does Not Stay Clean Following Oral Surgery?Oral surgery is one of the outpatient procedures that take place in the dentist's office or clinic. Depending on the severity of your oral problem, you can go about your business some hours after this dental process. But it does not imply that you overlook all vital steps needed to speed up your recovery. Instead, you should follow all the instructions given to you by our oral surgeons following your surgery. These post-surgery instructions are there to promote proper healing while preventing any complications. One of the instructions is to keep your mouth clean during the healing period. What should you expect if your mouth does not stay clean following your oral surgery?

Consequences of Poor Oral Hygiene After Surgery

A few minutes after the oral surgery, your mouth is likely to go numb for several hours. Therefore, be sure to apply caution when taking food, drinking, or even speaking. Most importantly, keep your mouth clean throughout the healing process. Failure to do so amounts to all kinds of dental problems that can negatively impact your oral health. These problems are mainly oral infections that can range from minor to severe cases. Swelling, bleeding, and numbness are some of the minor issues, and they are quite common immediately after the surgery.

If your mouth remains unclean for too long, you may experience prolonged bleeding that can last for more than 24 hours. Apart from that, you will experience throbbing pain that doesn't stop even after taking pain medication. The infection may also increase swelling of your jaws, gums, and face. If you don't take drastic measures in time, you may experience oozing discharge from the affected areas, difficulty opening your mouth, and persistent fever. You can prevent all these dental issues by adhering to our instructions. Make sure to call us or visit our office if you notice an oral infection after the surgery.
