Things that Commonly Lend to Dental Implant Rejection

Things that Commonly Lend to Dental Implant RejectionWhile most dental implant surgeries are successful, lack or good oral hygiene or dental neglect can lead to implant failures. The following information further elaborates on why this happens.

Major Reasons for Failure

Dental implants may fail for one of two main reasons: failed osseointegration of the implant with the bone, or an infection known as peri-implantitis. Peri-implantitis happens when a patient neglects care of their teeth and does not brush and floss regularly. This form of gum disease infects and damages the bone, which, in turn, loosens the implant. If the implant does not fuse with the bone properly, it will also not be secured. When osseointegration does not occur, as anticipated, it may be due to a habit, such as smoking, or because the bone is not substantial enough to hold an implant. Normally, an implant that fails shortly after surgery does so after about four months.

Supporting Reasons Why Implants Fail

Implants may also fail to integrate with the bone and become unstable because of a deprived blood supply. This often happens because of smoking. Also, an existing infection in the mouth will prevent the implant from staying intact. If the implant moves or shifts during healing, it will fail and come out later. Also, an underlying health condition can lead to implant failure. Late implant failures may result because of an additional strain placed on the implant, a lack of gum tissue, poor oral hygiene, or grinding or clenching of the teeth. That is why we make it a priority to ensure against failure. The implant patient should have enough bone to support an implant, have any gum disease treated, and be committed to regular oral care. We also will check to make sure the patient does not have a condition, such a bruxism, which can damage an implant and lead to failure.
