What is an Oral Splint?

Posted on 6/22/2020 by Young Jun DDS MD FACS
What is an Oral Splint? An oral splint is a device most commonly used for people who suffer from temporomandibular disorder (TMD). They are sometimes referred to as a TMD or TMJ appliance. They are small devices that are thin. Users of an oral splint bite down on the device to relieve pressure in their jaw muscle. They can be effective at reducing the effects of TMD, however, they can't cure the disorder.

Oral splints are typically made of a hard material such as plastic and acrylic and can come in many different colors including clear. Their main purpose is to stop the teeth from grinding against one another as a way to save the teeth from wear on the biting surfaces. They may be implemented by some individuals who also suffer from a misaligned bite. Unlike other devices used to treat teeth grinding, oral splints are worn throughout the day and can be taken out at night.

Symptoms of TMD and Why It's Important to Treat

The symptoms of TMD are constant soreness below the cheek, popping of the jawbone, ringing in the ears, and earaches. TMD may not seem like a serious disorder, however, the long-term effects of TMD can be quite severe. People who suffer from TMD often experience sleep problems and constant headaches. It's also possible for teeth to suffer physical damage when they are constantly being ground down. This is why it is important to treat this disorder as soon as possible.
