What Is the Right Age for Wisdom Teeth Extraction?
Posted on 9/2/2024 by Young Jun DDS MD FACS
People of any age can get their wisdom teeth removed if they are causing problems. Even so, it is best to do it between 18 and 24. Once the roots of the wisdom teeth are about two-thirds grown, it is safe to remove them. Usually, the roots develop at 16, and by this age, it is clear how the wisdom teeth will develop.
It is not recommended to wait past 24 because the roots are fully formed by then, making the extraction process more complicated. At a younger age, you can heal quickly. If you wait longer, the surgery might be more complex, recovery could take longer, and there could be more risks.
Why Remove Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom tooth extraction is often necessary for several reasons. First, the teeth could be impacted, meaning they do not have enough room to emerge properly through the gum line. This can cause pain, swelling, and infection.
The other reason for wisdom teeth removal is overcrowding. Wisdom teeth can push against neighboring teeth as they try to erupt, leading to crowding and misalignment of the other teeth. Partially erupted wisdom teeth can create pockets where bacteria accumulate, leading to infection (pericoronitis). In cases where orthodontic treatment is planned, removing wisdom teeth may be necessary to prevent shifting of the teeth after braces are removed.
Can Wisdom Teeth Be Removed in Old Age?
While the best age to extract wisdom teeth is between 18 and 24, it does not mean they cannot be removed later. You can remove wisdom teeth at any age if necessary. Removing them at an older age may require a lengthy healing period. You should be able to return to everyday life after one to two weeks of extraction. If you are older, the healing period might be longer.
