How Should You Care for Your Loved One Post Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery?

A man in dental chair ready for oral surgeryIf your loved one had oral and maxillofacial surgery, they will look to you for help through their recovery. Recovery is a process that may take time, requiring them to follow post-operative instructions from their surgeon. Here is how to care for your loved one after an oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Drive Them After Surgery

A critical duty to play for your loved one toward their recovery is to drive them home after surgery. After the surgery, they will still be tired due to the anesthesia effect, requiring someone to take them home.

Encourage Rest

Most patients will need up to two days of rest, depending on how invasive the surgery was. If they are experiencing extreme fatigue, ensure adequate rest through regular naps and avoiding unnecessary activities. You can make your loved one comfortable and restful by providing distractions and activities such as magazines, gaming, and watching movies. To minimize pain and swelling, stack their rest space with enough pillows to elevate their head and ensure comfort.

Make Them a Healthy and Soft Diet

Post-operation, a patient must take a soft or liquid diet to allow the area to heal correctly. Therefore, prepare supplemental drinks and stock the fridge with nutritious foods such as hummus, mashed potatoes, and pudding. Providing a consistent supply of healthy foods will reduce the temptation to eat hard and chewy foods.

Watch for Complications

Caring for your loved one also means staying in touch with their progress and spotting any unusual symptoms. These symptoms include fever, numbness, dizziness, increased swelling, intense pain, and pus around the surgical site. If you notice any of the above, help them contact the dental surgeon immediately for help.

Caring for someone is a lot of work but worth it, especially if it is a loved one. If you are experiencing any challenges in supporting them post-surgery, contact us immediately. Be sure to keep your loved one comfortable in the meantime.
