How Long Does It Take for Your Mouth to Heal After Jaw Surgery?

Posted on 1/15/2024 by Weo Admin
A person holding their jaw in painIndividuals that can benefit from jaw surgery include those with incorrectly positioned jaws and an improper bite. Your dental surgeon and their surgical team will prepare you for the procedure through pre-operative and post-surgery instructions. Adherence to these instructions will impact your recovery period in the following phases:

Up to Two Weeks

From the first day post-surgery up to two weeks, you can expect some swelling that will be visible to anyone who sees you. You will also experience discomfort, manageable with painkillers, and you should plan with a loved one to stay over with you post-surgery to help with basic tasks. Keeping your head upright is advisable. You should also eat nutritious soft foods and drinks for fast healing.

For up to one month, avoid exercise and other activities that can raise your pulse or blood pressure, as these can trigger bleeding. You can do some gentle exercises in the second week, but cardio should wait for up to six weeks.

One to Two Months

After a month, you can resume moderate chewing to strengthen your jaw muscles, but avoid chewy foods, as these will strain your jaw. Depending on your energy and health, you can also return to work, school, and other routines.

Two to Four Months

After the second month, you can resume physical activities, including exercise and sports, but ensure you have a mouth guard for protection. Remember, while there is notable healing around the sixth to eighth week, you should allow your body a safe recovery pace.
