If your wisdom teeth lack enough room for erupting via the gums, this is when pericoronitis happens. The wisdom teeth with less space to protrude will partially break through the gum. That, in return, led to infection and inflammation of the soft tissue close to the wisdom tooth. Gum flaps are experienced in patients with partially erupted gums; an infection happens after food is trapped in these flaps because of bacteria building up. Pericoronitis can be either long-term or short-term. Pericoronitis is common among people under the age of 40 years and below.
Symptoms Of Pericoronitis
The severity of an infection's severity determines the symptoms of patients suffering from pericoronitis. For instance, patients with chronic infection will have the following symptoms of pericoronitis: mild discomfort, bad taste in the mouth, swollen gum around the affected part, or dull pain. Although the chronic symptoms will last for two days at most, they are recurring. Some acute symptoms of pericoronitis are as follows: fever, pus discharge, swallowing becoming painful, chronic pain that causes insomnia, or the lymph nodes below the chin becoming swollen.
What Causes Pericoronitis
Pericoronitis is common among people aged 20 years, with the impacted population between 2o to 29 years. This condition is found in both women and men equally. Also, the infection can be triggered by various factors, including pregnancy, stress, upper respiratory tract infection, and bad oral hygiene. To avoid spreading the disease to the rest of the body, have a dentist diagnose it during your clinical evaluation. Dentists will look at the presence of pericoronitis and examine whether there are any signs of wisdom teeth. Some symptoms dentists look out for are swollen, inflamed, red gums of draining pus. A gum flap is also a red flag that signals dentists that their patients suffer from pericoronitis.
